Compulsory registration now required for all qualified artisans
According to an announcement by the Overstrand Municipality, a compulsory Artisan Registration Drive will take place on 19 and 20 May 2026 in Hermanus. The event will be held in the HR Training Room and will run from 09:00 to 15:00 each day.
The planned drive in Hermanus appears to be part of a broader project to get artisans in South Africa registered on a database.
The official communication states that all qualified artisans are now required to register on the National Register of Artisans. This applies to individuals who qualified through a trade test or other routes under the Skills Development Act.
The purpose of the registration is to confirm qualifications and improve skills planning. It is also intended to support job mobility, allowing artisans to work across different regions of the country.
From a practical perspective, this type of regulation has both strengths and weaknesses. It may help government better understand the skills base in South Africa and reduce qualification fraud. However, it also adds an additional layer of administration for individuals who are already qualified and working. This raises a broader question of whether further regulatory requirements are necessary. Also, knowing South Africa is it not wiser to stay independent?
